JOY'S CARVED ART

Wildlife Inspired Wood Sculptures and Woodturnings
Artist statement

I encourage people to touch my sculptures. I want them to feel that the fur or feathers are actually made of wood even though they appear to be real.   Being anatomically correct is necessary, but equally important is to portray an attitude or personality in the piece.  When it's time to set the eyes in an animal or bird, I believe that I’ve accomplished my goal when it looks back at me.
With the turnings, I'm able to combine the two art forms and stay with the realism of wildlife while creating a turned piece with some character.  I love nature and enjoy bringing its beauty and splendor into my work.

My husband John & I own and operate a machining service. He is my partner and critic and as a toolmaker, he has a keen eye and an engineering knowledge sometimes needed with wood sculptures.

I have much more to learn and look forward to every minute.
